Amsterdam Red Light District (main area)
This is by far the most famous of the three red light districts in Amsterdam. The other two- Singlegebied and De Pijp are much smaller and less busy. If you want to see the area in it's full glory then visit around 9pm. Most of the ladies have started their shifts and the shops and venues are all open. If you prefer earlier then go mid afternoon. Avoid before 11am and tea time when it's very quiet and there's not much going on. If you came for the architecture or canals then morning is fine. You'll avoid the drunks and general crowds. Be careful where you point your camera though. If a working lady thinks you are photographing them things can get very nasty. Obviously be aware of pickpockets at anytime but it's generally safe and getting even safer.

The future
The main red light district is a very popular tourist attraction. That makes it high profile and anything negative gets reported worldwide. So it's little wonder that many Dutch find it an embarrassment with it's drunken stag parties, sex & drugs tourism and anything goes reputation. In addition it has a history of gangsters, money launderers, pimps and suspected trafficking. These issues are addressed in project 1012 which seeks to improve the whole centre of Amsterdam including a reduction and better monitoring of the RLD.
The result of this is some closed windows and a more sanitised red light district. Most windows around the Oudekerk will likely shut in the coming years and upmarket shops, restaurants and businesses will move in after an initial transition period. Remaining window owners will also be closely monitored to deter exploitation. Many believe this is the end of the red light district but that is far from true. The plans were set out in 2007 and have actually been watered down with many planned closures cancelled and even 14 "new" windows opening in May 2017. In coming years the RLD will mostly be focused along the main Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal with plenty of venues and windows to please both tourists and the more seasoned visitor.

George Says
Any reduction to the RLD is obviously sad for those who enjoy it but with all of the above in mind I would rather have it smaller and more closely monitored than risk it closing altogether after some big crime or wrong doing is exposed like in Utrecht.
