A large section of Oudezijds Achterburgwal is pumped dry enabling workmen to improve the canal walls.

The other half remains full of water.

The area is fairly water tight though pumps continuously pump out the leaks.

The narrow streets and canals makes it difficult for heavy machinery to gain access and work.

A platform is used for the machines.

Equipment is stored on the canal itself so the canal side streets remain relatively clear.

Surprisingly pedestrians are allowed to walk past the working machines.

I assume they were building an area so that one side can be drained of water.

Stoofbrug (stoof bridge) has been removed for the duration of the work. I am told it will be put back when work is completed.

Also in March 2011. Canal side lamp posts are removed and replaced with shiny new ones closer to the buildings. Trees are also removed. (March

Trompettersteeg 5 (June 2011)

In 2007 under the 2003 BIBOB act several red light windows were closed. Most were initially used for 'house art installations' and 'designers fashion creations'.
In June 2011 some of those displays still remained though others had gone. For example Oudekerksplein 22 had become Red Light Radio and Oudezijds Achterburgwal 64 had become an ice cream shop. Several however were empty and starting to look abandoned.
Dates show when the photos were taken.

Miscellaneous
Above and below. Canals are regularly dredged for rubbish. I watched while they pulled bike after bike out of the Oudezijds Achterburgwal and Oudezijds Voorburgwal. (August 2008)
Trompettersteeg with Bethlemsteeg in the distance. taken from the upstairs room at Tromp 3-1. A very nice young lady let me lean out of her window to take this photograph. (June 2011)
Oudezijds Achterburgwal 43-3. Feel free to make up your own jokes. (May 2009)

No photography signs are on almost every window. These should be taken very seriously. If a girl's picture appears on the internet it can lead to huge problems for them back home including physical violence.  That is why they will yell, scream and often chase tourists who take photos of them.
Kamer (room / window) for hire sign. The girls rent a room from an owner and pay each day at one of several 'offices'.
Prices are typically around 140 Euros per 8 hour shift.
