Amsterdam Smoker Friendly Hotels

Sorry guys, only tobacco related smoking on this page. Although smoking is banned in all Dutch hotels some choose to allow it any way. A few are open about it but others do not like to advertise the fact. I can confirm though that all the hotels below do allow it (Dec 2011) within their premises. Exact policies vary and naturally things can change.
The green marker is Frans Versluis Tobacconist on Damrak. A good place for UK smokers to stock up.
The map extends further than my main hotels map which concentrates only on the red light district. Naturally there is some over lap between the maps.

Dutch Smoking Ban
2002
The Tobacco Act bans smoking in all public buildings and institutions. Advertising is outlawed as well as the sale of cigarettes to people under 18 years old. The ban is then extended to include public transport and associated closed spaces such as waiting rooms.

2004
Rulings introduced means a smoke free place of work for all.

2008
Smoking is banned in places like hotels, bars and restaurants. This is to protect not only the public from passive smoke but also employees. Smoking is allowed however in places with a separate enclosed designated smoking area which is not serviced by employees.

2010

The smoking ban is lifted for small bars and cafés (under 70 square meters)  which have no staff. This leads to many other larger establishments simply ignoring the law and an estimated 50% of cafés and discotheques allow smoking.

Bringing Cigarettes and Tobacco back to UK

2011 October
New guidelines are set for bringing tobacco products into the UK from a European Union country. These are drastically lower than the previous 'limits' so importers beware! In theory you can bring in as much as you want providing it is for your own use. However if you go above the guidelines then you may get hassle from custom officers. They will want to satisfy themselves that it is not for resale so will ask questions about who it is for, how much you smoke and how often you travel etc. Not wishing to scare anyone, but if you are a driver they can and do seize cars used to transport tobacco products they consider imported for resale.
Prices are cheaper in Belgium so an excursion to the red light districts of Antwerp or Brussels is something to consider.
