This is a family friendly look at European red light districts with a bias towards Amsterdam. There's several of my unique interactive maps with links to over 1000 of my own photos.
My Amsterdam red light district pages cover the red light windows, restaurants, hotels (including smoker friendly), coffeeshops plus a little bit of history and a little bit of culture
I want to dispel the myth that these areas are dangerous and grotty and show that most are perfectly safe and set in beautiful and /
or historic locations (Utrecht and Ghent for example). If you have any questions about my site or any city covered here please feel free to contact me- .
Please note that booking hotels through one of my Booking.com links helps to maintain this site and gives me an incentive to keep going!
Thanks for looking,
George.

George's news:
Just returned home from my 2nd trip of 2017 to Amsterdam. Despite some rain and heavy winds it was pretty full, especially in the evenings. Great visit as always.
I regret to say that Miranda recently died from natural causes. She worked on the OZA canal in the late 90s ealy 00s.

Introduction to Amsterdam's Main Red Light District (de rosse buurt)

Amsterdam has three red light districts. The famous main one (De Wallen / Walletjes), Singelgebied and De Pijp. The main one has ~290 red light windows and extends across the two canals Oudezijds Voorburgwal & Oudezijds Achterburgwal and neighbouring streets.
In an attempt to 'clean up' the general area there are plans (Project 1012) to reduce it's size and confine it to the Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal and immediate surrounding streets.
The best time to visit the main red light district depends on what kind of person you are. If you are open minded and don't mind crowds then I would advise between 9pm and 10pm. By this time everything has come to life. The windows are full of scantily clad women and the adult shows and shops are in full swing.
A recent law forces all adult shops to close by 10pm so daring neon
window displays are turned off and some of the atmosphere is lost. Things remain busy though until around midnight when the organised tour groups and casual tourists become less and less. You are then left with more seasoned visitors and a few dodgy looking characters (like me).
If you are less adventurous then go during mid afternoon. It's still fairly busy though less chaotic
than later.
You may well be surprised at how beautiful and safe it is with families walking around and locals going about their normal business. You may wonder why the unenlightened condemn this place as if it was some sort of Sodom and Gomorrah as you walk by the marvelous Oude Kerk in the very heart of Amsterdam's red light district.

Red Light District News (and other) - Spring 2017

Amsterdam Red Light District
New red light area in Utrecht on hold.

Previously I reported that the new red light building in Utrecht was being constructed. Unfortunately the owners were involved in illegal activities so they are not permitted to continue. This means the project is once again on hold.
The "new" windows in and around Boomsteeg in Amsterdam are due to open in May 2017.
No windows have closed yet in 2017.

With so much negative crap (from both sides) written about Amsterdam RLD I will once again state the area is not closing down and is as good now as it ever was. It's far safer and cleaner than when I first visited in the early 90s and there are more efforts to keep out organised crime and trafficking.
Prices have risen but only inline with inflation. Bizarrely some people expect them to stay the same for ever.

Dam Square
"Over The Edge" and A'dam Lookout has amazing views of Amsterdam. Highly recommended.
January 2017 window count: Amsterdam main- 279, Singelgebied- 64, De Pijp- 41. Total = 384.

George's map of Amsterdam's main red light district

The only up to date map of the area in the world!

Please Note: The (updated) interactive version of this map has moved to here. It has over 180 clickable hotspots linking to my own photos of every red light window and location on the map plus videos and information on many. I moved it to a separate page in February 2014 to speed up page loading times (The clickable hotspots also have mouseover images which slows down the page).
