Tips and advice for your trip to Amsterdam. Based on my 20 years of visiting.  

Amsterdam has three red light districts (see their locations here). The famous main one ( known to locals as De Wallen or Walletjes), Singelgebied and De Pijp. The main one currently has 294 red light windows and extends across the two canals Oudezijds Voorburgwal & Oudezijds Achterburgwal and neighbouring streets. In an attempt to 'clean up' the general area there are plans (Project 1012) to reduce the size and confine it to the Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal and immediate surrounding streets.  
The best time to visit the red light district depends on what kind of person you are. If you are open minded and don't mind crowds then I would advise between 9pm and 10pm. By this time everything has come to life. The windows are full of scantily clad women and the adult shows and shops are in full swing. A recent law forces all adult shops to close by 10pm though so daring neon window displays are turned off and some of the atmosphere is lost. Things remain busy though until around midnight when the organised tour groups and casual tourists get less and less. You are then left with more seasoned visitors and the dodgy looking characters that seem to increase as the night goes on.
If you are less adventurous then visit during the day after 1pm. You may be surprised at how beautiful and safe it is with families walking around and locals going about their normal business. You may even wonder why the unenlightened condemn this place as if it was some sort of Sodom and Gomorrah as you walk by the marvelous Oude Kerk in the very heart of the red light district. 

Latest Red Light District News 18th April 2013

The canal works on Oudezijds Achterburgwal seem to have finished. They have put back the old street lights and planted new trees. The building on the corner of Sint Annendwarsstraat and Trompettersteeg where some of last years closed windows are situated is now being renovated. This means the top part of Trompettersteeg is covered over and there is potential for noise in this area. As with the old Sexy Land building there are rumours of it being some sort of gallery. Four windows in De Pijp have closed for good. I don't think it has anything to do with last years closures in the main red light district. Absolute Danny has now closed.
